SROG Southern Avenue Interceptor and Manhole Rehabilitation

The project consisted of approximately 140 manholes, 4 bypasses, 5 sections of pipe to rehab, 48 Ring and Cover Adjustment/Replacements & 1 flow diversion. The manhole work was a combination of epoxy rehabilitation and PVC liner repair that spread nearly 17 miles from 87th Avenue and Broadway to 48th Street and Southern Avenue. B&F bypassed 4 sections of pipe from 27th Avenue to 48th Street and Southern Avenue. This work consisted of setting up and maintaining a full bypass for two 45 Million Gallons per Day (MGD) systems and one 33 MGD system. The bypass allowed access for SONCO Construction to repair damaged t-lock pipe that had been in services for over 30 years. B&F won the contract by its ability to utilize its own equipment and extensive City of Phoenix sewer system knowledge.

Due to our extensive knowledge of the City of Phoenix’s system and experience in setting up bypass systems, B&F determined that there was a significant cost saving in reducing the 3rd and 4th bypass into one system. B&F combined the 48th Street bypass, and the 44th Street bypass into one bypass system ultimately reducing the cost estimate of the project. This ultimately reduced the impact to the traveling public as well. B&F found creative routes for the discharge piping material especially at major intersections to reduce the time and impacts of the public. B&F drastically reduced the impact to both 7th street and 27th Avenue intersections by utilizing these alternate routes which ultimately saved schedule and reduced the impact of the traveling public.

During the project, B&F discovered a large hole in the pipe crown that was over 36” in diameter and more than 18” of the surrounding back fill was gone. B&F discussed and proposed solutions to the owner within a few days of the discovery. The pipe was repaired without any significant impact to the project or costly downtime on the bypass system.
